SUMMARY OF
THE ORIGINAL FAIRY TALE– COLAPESCE BY ITALO CALVINO
Colapesce is
a guy who lives in Sicily and loves the sea. When his mom calls him to come
home, he doesn't come right back.
She then
says, "May he become a fish!" And so it is, he becomes half man and
half fish, his hands and feet are webbed, his throat is like a frog, and he
breathes underwater.
He becomes
famous for his skills and is invited by the king of Messina to reach the depths
of the sea and report what he sees.
Colapesce
discovers wonders and mixed creatures and communicates his discoveries to the king, such as
the fact that Sicily rests on a rock supported by three columns.
The king asks
him for increasingly dangerous things and Colapesce refuses to go deeper out of
fear.
The king,
however, throws the crown into the sea and orders him to fetch it.
The boy, who
respects the kingdom, decides to go and get her. He takes some lentils with him
and says that if they came to the surface without him, it would mean that he
would never come back up.
That's what happens. Colapesce remains in the
depths of the sea with the crown on its head, becoming the king of fish, squid
and shrimp. Everyone is waiting for one day to rise to the surface again.
